Kellen Moore talks life after Boise State

Exclusive interview with Boise State great Kellen Moore and his wife, Julie.

BOISE - Kellen Moore handles his life off the football field the way he approaches his life on it: one day at a time.

That explains why he and his wife, Julie, after he made a roster spot on the Detroit Lions, decided to rent an apartment in Detroit and buy a home in Boise.

"Just with the NFL and the uncertainty, we felt good at the time," Kellen said. "We thought, let's just settle here and see where this goes."

So, for about 8 months of the year, Kellen, Julie, and little Kyler hunker down in Detroit.

Julie took then 2-month old Kyler to his first NFL game in October hanging out in starting quarterback Matthew Stafford's luxury suite while Kellen hung out in sweats on the sideline hoping that someday his number will be called in a regular season game.

The other four months the family can be found at their home in Boise, doing what any young couple with a 6-month old does: hang out at home.

"He (Kyler) runs the show, you quickly realize that," Kellen laughed. "We're trying to bring film back to the house in Detroit during the season and quickly realize there's no time to watch film when I'm home. We're locked in."

"It's been a lot of fun," added Julie. "Not as much sleep as I used to get in, but we're loving it."

As a NFL free agent there is some question over what happens next for Kellen. All indications are that Detroit will bring him back and he'll compete for the second-string quarterback job.

If he doesn't get the number two job, he says he's content to continue in the role he's had for the last three years as the third man on the depth chart.

"Yeah, I mean play a few pre-season games and then watch the game from the sidelines the rest of the year, so it's hard to mess that thing up," he joked.

That all brings us back to why he and Julie decided to make Boise their home base. And that is life, someday after the NFL.

If the dreams of Bronco Nation come to pass, that could include life as a Boise State football coach.

"We'd love to be back at some point obviously," Kellen said. "This NFL thing has been awesome for us, we've enjoyed it. We'll see where it takes us and when we are done with that chapter we'll move on and see what happens. We'd love to be back at that point."
