AUSTIN — Janell Monáe put music lovers at weekend one of the Austin City Music Festival in a trance with her songs about female empowerment and support for the LGBTQ community.
At one point, Monáe said, "No matter who you love or how you love. You are welcome at my show anytime." She then encouraged everyone to put their hearts in the air and move closer to their loved ones.
With her psychedelic-soul beats and funk melodies, the crowd grooved along with Monáe, as she changed in and out of costumes. Her multiple outfits included a military-style red and black jacket and pant combination, a 90's-esque number and tribute to Africa, pink-parachute pants, and a Michael Jackson sequins ensemble.
All of them unique and signature to Monáe's personality. She's an artist who encourages originality, especially in her fans.
"We're celebrating the things that make you unique, even if it makes others uncomfortable," she said as the crowd cheered her on.
Monáe finished her set with her first big hit "Tightrope" and encouraged everyone to not forget to vote.
