Garb, gifted artists and Garbage Pail Kids at Gem State Comic Con

The Con had a slew of performers, fans in costumes and artists, one of them is an artist from Boise who creates special cards for Garbage Pail Kids.

BOISE, Idaho — People showed up in droves to the Gem State Comic Con on Saturday at Expo Idaho. People came decked out in their finest cosplay costumes to mingle, meet artists and go to panels. The outfits did not disappoint. Characters from "Star Wars," "Black Panther," "The Predator," various Anime and many others roamed the Con.

From adults to kids, everyone seemed to be having a blast and, hopefully, finding the droids they were looking for.

The Con boasted some big name stars like Sean Astin from "The Goonies" and "Lord of the Rings," Colin Baker, the sixth doctor in the British series "Dr. Who," Clem So from "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens," and "Guardians of The Galaxy," and Brian A. Prince from "The Predator" and "Black Panther."

There were plenty of people paying homage to those better known characters.

However, walking down the isles of vendors, there were also some lesser known names that are producing some majorly cool art.

Jeff Cox is a freelance artist, who among other things, creates special one-of-a-kind Garbage Pail Kids cards that go out in random packs.

"I am a sketch card artist for tops drawing Garbage Pail Kids," Cox said. "I've been doing it for about four or five years now. I started off doing Star Wars sketch cards and traversed into Garbage Pail Kids. I grew up with the original card set. So I studied the cards when I was a kid, and to be able to draw them now. It's just it's really an honor. It's really fun."

He said Garbage Pail Kids are having a resurgence and finding a sketch card in a pack is kind of like finding a "golden ticket" because they are pretty rare. There's only one sketch card in about every 400 packs.

"Basically Topps will send me a box of like 100 blank cards, and I draw on them mail them back. They get inserted into packs and distributed around the world," he said. "I have people that will find my cards in Italy and Australia all over the US and Canada. There's a pool about 50 or 60 other guys, myself included. So yeah, it's exactly like finding the golden ticket."

Cox said it has been great to get back in Boise and he's really been enjoying the Con.

"Boise is really where I've considered home for for a long, long time. So it's really great. This is a really good con, too. There's a lot of people. I'm having a ball. I'm having a blast," he said.

There were also plenty of people at the Con appreciating the vendors and artists, and also dressed in lesser known cosplay. Although, it was not less impressive.

Last but not least, a DeLorean also came 'Back From the Future" to make an appearance.
