PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland-based Fred Meyer, the "One Stop Shopping" retailer that operates 132 stores in Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Alaska, has announced that it is taking steps to no longer sell firearms and ammunition.

In a news release issued late Friday, the company said it decided last week to "responsibly phase out" sales after looking at the preferences of customers and taking into account that Fred Meyer had already been trying to cut back on the firearms category during the past several years because of weakening consumer demand.

The company said firearms and ammunition represent only about $7 million of revenue annually, and that sales continue to decline.

Fred Meyer's parent company, Kroger, previously announced that it was joining Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods and limiting gun and ammunition sales to people 21 and older.

The retailers changed their policies after the mass shooting on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.
