ADA COUNTY-- A call that appears to come from local businesses, a government agency, or even friends, could be someone else trying to sell something or figure out another way to get your money.
The process is called "caller ID spoofing". The Ada County Sheriffs Office says it's becoming more and more widespread. They say it's similar to the jury duty and IRS scam calls Ada County residents have been receiving for the last several years.
Here are some tips to help keep you from being victimized by the latest phone scam:
First, know that Ada County Sheriff's Office employees, including deputies, will never call you and ask for a credit card number.
You can also protect yourself by never giving out personal information when getting an unsolicited phone call. The Ada County Sheriff's Office says that giving out sensitive information over the phone can put people at risk for fraud.
