Winds and cooler conditions return Sunday, mountain showers possible

The daily forecast from Idaho's largest, most experienced team of meteorologists.

BOISE, Idaho — Hopefully, you got to enjoy this stunner of a Saturday with valley highs in the mid-70's and mountain highs near 60°, with ample sunshine adding to the pleasantness to the day.

However, the ideal conditions are short lived as a cold front is set to usher in colder temperatures and more valley winds. The front and associated winds move in overnight. So, if you have a wind chime outside, or something that makes noise, you may want to take it down tonight to sleep peacefully. Gusts are expected to be weaker than what we experienced on Friday, but will still be noticeable and possibly a nuisance to your Sunday plans. In the Magic Valley, maximum wind gusts will be up near 30-35 mph. In the Treasure Valley, those are closer to 20-25 mph.

The cold front will bring in colder air from the north dropping high temperatures down about 10 degrees for Sunday. Valley highs are expected to be near the mid 60's, but in combination with the winds, it may feel a bit cooler than that at times. Though mostly sunny skies are expected in valleys, so the sunshine should help combat the cooler feel of the wind.

The cold front will also bring some chances of spotty showers to West Central and Boise Mountain areas. There is a chance some of these showers develop in the morning when temperatures are back near/below freezing, which may result in a few snowflakes. More likely though, are some spotty afternoon rain showers. Snow levels are expected to be around 5,000 feet in the morning, then rise to about 6,000 feet as daytime temperatures rise.

Shower chances linger for mountain areas on Monday as well. Meanwhile, in valley areas valleys will have another breezy day with gusts near 30 mph again.

Tuesday is expected to be a nice break from the wind and shower chances, as a high pressure ridge briefly moves in. Temperatures are expected to be slightly below average (average in Boise is 73°), but by just a few degrees.

The next best chance of widespread showers, in both valleys and mountains, is expected on Wednesday as a low pressure system takes aim at the Gem State. Isolated thunderstorms in mountain areas may be possible with this system.

After Wednesday, the unsettled pattern continues, keeping shower chances in the forecast.
