Meridian 'Unplug and Be Outside' campaign kicks off

MERIDIAN - The city of Meridian has kicked off eight days of activities encouraging people of all ages to get out of the house and spend some quality time away from glowing screens.

The Meridian Parks and Recreation Department hosted the kickoff for its 'Unplug and Be Outside' initiative Saturday in Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park.

One goal of the initiative is to let children and adults know about the department's outdoor programs and services, which go way beyond the playground.

"We believe really strongly in the value of play and the value in community," said Renee White, recreation coordinator. "So our parks are designed with ponds so you can come out and fish. They're designed with disc golf so you can disc golf, or you can just come and play basketball."

Free activities and classes offered May 5 through May 12 include - but aren't limited to - drop-in sports at Meridian Homecourt, line dancing, walking, running, fishing, golf, lacrosse, tennis, yoga, and gardening-related activities. A complete schedule is available here.
