BOISE -- Boise State sophomore quarterback Brett Rypien and junior running back Jeremy McNichols were both named to The Maxwell Award watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced Tuesday.
Rypien is coming of a historic first year at Boise State, in which is became the first true freshman in conference to be named First Team All-Mountain West at quarterback. He led the league in passing yards (3,353) and completions (273) and ranked second in touchdown passes (21) despite missing the first two and a half games of the season.
McNichols also made the most of his first year as a starter in 2015. He tied for second in the NCAA with 26 total touchdowns, and was the only player in the country last year with 20 rushing touchdown and 5 or more receiving touchdowns.
In addition, McNichols finished his sophomore season fifth in the Mountain West in rushing (1,337 yards), tied for sixth in touchdown catches (6) and ninth in total receptions (51).
The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the college football player of the year. The preseason watch list consists of total 90 players. Boise State is one of 23 schools to have multiple players on the list.
Semi-finalists for the award will be announced on October 31, and the finalist will be unveiled on November 21.
The winner will be revealed at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 8.
