BOISE, Idaho — A beloved animal at Zoo Boise has died. Vinnie the warthog was 12 years old and passed away in his sleep. Although people might not see a warthog as conventionally beautiful, because of his personality, Vinnie had a face that anyone could love.
"Vinnie passed away peacefully in his sleep, and while it is always difficult to say goodbye to a beloved member of our family, the zoo team takes comfort in knowing that he lived a full and happy life while inspiring many people," a news release stated.
The warthog has been at the zoo since 2019. The zoo stated that Vinnie had charm, a unique personality and during his stay he brought joy to staff and visitors.
"Vinnie's well-being was always our top priority and our zookeepers went above and beyond to care him," said Zoo Boise Director Gene Peacock. "Staff worked tirelessly to ensure he lived his later years as comfortably as possible, and we will all miss him dearly."
As an older warthog, Vinnie has several health issues, he had arthritis in three legs. The zoo gave him braces, injections and pain medicine delivered via his favorite treat, a peanut butter tortilla in melon sauce. The zoo stated that Vinnie always cooperated and endured the health care routines.
"Zoo Boise remains committed to providing the highest quality of care for all its animals. The zoo team will continue to honor Vinnie's memory by applying the same level of dedication to every animal who calls Zoo Boise home," stated the release.
