Technology malfunction spurs Meridian High lockdown, police say

School officials say the lockdown was ultimately a false alarm, and there was no safety threat.

MERIDIAN -- A technology malfunction at Meridian High triggered a lockdown Wednesday morning that sent panicked students running from the school and into the surrounding neighborhoods.

The incident happened at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, the first day students returned to school from summer break.

School officials say the lockdown was ultimately a false alarm, and there was no safety threat.

An issue with the school's newly-implemented security badge system triggered the lockdown, officials said.

Meridian Police officers responded to the school and cleared it. The lockdown was lifted by about 11:15 a.m.

Students were instructed to return to second period. Classes will continue as normal.
