BOISE - One person died during an officer-involved shooting near downtown Boise Thursday night, police said.
The shooting happened just after 7:30 p.m. during a traffic stop on 27th Street, between Main Street and Fairview Avenue.
Police spokesperson Haley Williams told KTVB that the incident escalated during a traffic stop, and ended with an officer-involved shooting and one suspect dead at the scene.
Boise Police Dep. Chief Eugene Smith says a woman was driving the car and a man was in the backseat.
"When they made contact, the male passenger produced a handgun, threatened both the female driver as well as the officers," Smith said. "Officers were initially able to back off of the vehicle, additional officers responded to the location. Several directive commands were given to the individuals in the vehicle. The subject with the handgun... Boise police officers were forced to fire their weapons at that subject."
At this point, Smith says it's "way too early in the investigation for me to identify or even try to presume whether or not [the suspect fired his weapon]."
No officers were injured in the shooting.
"The female driver of the vehicle was able to immediately get out of the vehicle," Smith said. "She is in a safe place now with Boise Police. Obviously situations like this are traumatic for all those involved and certainly for the individual that was in the car."
Police say the critical incident task force (CITF), led by Idaho State Police, is investigating the shooting.
This is the second officer-involved shooting for the Boise Police Department this week. A shooting on Monday morning left a man in critical condition.
