Rare coins stolen, dumped into counting machine

PORTLAND -- Police recovered thousands of dollars worth of rare coins that had been dumped into a coin counting machine.

On Christmas Eve, Portland police said a group of suspects broke into Dan Johnson's work shed in Corbett. The crooks stole two safes which contained 50-60 pounds of silver, along with jewels and rare coins.

I was physically sick for a week thinking about the loss, said Johnson.

The victim provided detectives with a list of possible suspects. Investigators believe Johnson's son, Dan Johnson Jr. is the ringleader. Investigators said two other suspects cooperated by confessing to pawning some valuables.

Police say they also admitted dumping thousands of dollars worth of rare coins into a coin counting machine for $450.

Police recovered most of the stolen coins and valuables.

We did get lucky that we were able to get on this quickly and get the stuff back, said Det. Ken Yohe of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

Police expected to charged three suspects for the theft case, including the victim's son.
