Big rally at Idaho Capitol for the start of Red Ribbon Week

The event is held every year to encourage students to live a drug-free and purposeful life.

BOISE, Idaho — Red Ribbon Week is celebrating over three decades in Boise.

Around 1,000 Treasure Valley youth joined state and city officials at the Idaho Capitol Monday for the 31st annual Red Ribbon Week rally.

The event is sponsored by DrugFree Idaho and is held every year to encourage students to live a drug-free and purposeful life.

Ron Winegar, the deputy chief with the Boise Police Department has been an officer for 26 years and had this message to share.

"I've never met a single person that has said 'man I'm really glad I had that cigarette, I'm really glad I took that first drink, I'm really glad I tried meth that first time because it was awesome and it made my life so much better,” said Winegar. “It has always ended up ruining their lives and making life miserable and complicating everything else in life that's a struggle."

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country dating back to 1988.
