Mountain biker who died in Boise foothills crash identified

The 38-year-old man died after crashing off a trail and into a steep gulch near Avimor.

BOISE -- A Boise man died Saturday morning after he crashed his mountain bike off a foothills trail and into a steep gulch near Avimor.

The Ada County coroner has identified the man as 38-year-old Jason Delgadillo. A cause of death is pending further testing and investigation.

Delgadillo leaves behind a wife and five kids.

“The family can use all the support that they can get,” close friend Kirk Cheney said. “It's going to be a long set of years without that dad and especially that amazing dad.”

The accident happened before 9 a.m. on the Spring Valley Creek Trail.

According to the Ada County Sheriff's Office, Delgadillo was riding with another man when the pair became separated. When the other rider realized he could not find him, he asked some hikers whether they had seen another cyclist, then began backtracking along the trail.

The cyclist found an area where tire tracks went off the trail, then spotted Delgadillo and his mountain bike lying at the bottom of a steep gulch. He was in a creek about 10 or 15 feet from the trail, and was not breathing, sheriff's officials said.

The other cyclist began doing CPR, then found some nearby hikers, who called 911. The first deputy arrived to find three people doing CPR on the cyclist at the bottom of the gulch.

Paramedics and an air ambulance responded to the trail, but the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Ada County Sheriff's Office, Delgadillo was an experienced mountain biker and was wearing a helmet when he crashed.

There is a GoFundMe set up to help his family.
