Fire extensively damages Meridian home

No one was home when the fire ignited.

MERIDIAN, Idaho — A Sunday afternoon fire in a Meridian home located on Sweetwood Avenue extensively damaged the building and displaced at least one family.

No one was home at the time of the fire, according to officials at the scene. The home is occupied by rentals.

The cause of the fire is unknown and fire crews are still investigating inside the structure. The building was extensively damaged, according to crews at the scene.

"This one was big enough that we could see the smoke from 5, 6 miles away," Ken Welborn with the Meridian Fire Department said. "While we were in the middle of putting the fire out, part of the second floor collapsed down into the first floor, pretty extensive involvement inside."

More than 12 emergency vehicles were at the scene as of 1:16 p.m., including Eagle and Meridian fire crews, the Meridian Police Department and Ada County Paramedics.

By 1:19 p.m., there was no smoke coming out of the building, according to KTVB crews at the scene. Crews started to leave the area by 1:30 p.m.
