CAREY, Idaho — A Shelley man died early Tuesday morning after police say he crashed head-on into a cattle truck.

The collision happened at 12:38 a.m. on U.S. Highway 20-26-93 near Carey.

According to Idaho State Police, 51-year-old James L. Brannen was headed west in a Chevy Tahoe when he veered across the centerline, slamming into the oncoming truck.

The cattle truck, driven by 64-year-old William Featherston of Sun River, Montana, came to rest on the right shoulder. The impact spun the Tahoe, and it ultimately came to a stop in the westbound lanes.

Brannen died from his injuries at the scene. Police have not determined whether he was wearing a seatbelt, and it's unclear what caused him to cross over into oncoming traffic.

Featherston was wearing his seatbelt, and was not injured. No cattle were being transported in the truck when the wreck happened.

ISP is continuing to investigate.
