'Kind of like the Super Bowl of bass fishing': Nampa angler prepares for major tournament in Texas

Cody Murray will compete against 170 other anglers on January 10.

Fishing League Worldwide kicks off its first tournament of the new year in Texas next month, and one of its competitors will be Nampa's Cody Murray.

Bass fishing sunk its hooks into Murray from a young age.

“I started fishing 20 years ago at the local club tournament level,” Murray said.

From there he started fishing in the semi-pro circuit. Now, he's gearing up and getting ready to showcase his skills at the FLW Tour on January 10 at Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Texas.

“We fish from then to the end of June and the top 40 guys will qualify for the FLW tour cup,” Murray said. “That's kind of like the Super Bowl of bass fishing.”

About 170 anglers will participate in the tournament.

“You've got mostly guys from the United States, but you do have anglers that are from different countries,” Murray said.

Some of those countries include Japan and South Africa. Murray is not only hoping to reel in the fish, he’s also hoping to win big.

“If you win an FLW tour event, first prize is $125,000,” Murray said. “Personally, my goal would be to cash checks at six out of seven events.”

From Texas, Cody will return home before competing in other tournaments across the country, including in Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, New York and then the FLW Cup in Arkansas.

“There's a lot of great anglers out there and I’m blessed to be a part of that, but at the same time I know I can fish with those guys,” Murray said.

Fishing League Worldwide is the world's largest tournament fishing organization.
