CATALDO, Idaho – A woman is dead and a man was badly burned after sitting around a fire pit in Cataldo, Idaho.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a home around 7:30 p.m. Sunday on E. Canyon Road near Cataldo for a welfare check. Officials said William Mack, 71, called 911 to report that he needed help and that he thought his wife, Sandra Mack, 71, was dead.

Medical and fire personnel from Rose Lake and Kellogg Fire also responded. When authorities arrived on scene, they transported William to the hospital to be treated for severe burns. They said Sandra was found dead at the scene but had also suffered severe burns.

Deputies later learned the couple was outside near a fire pit when for an unknown reason or cause, both suffered severe burns.

An autopsy will be performed on Sandra Tuesday. William was transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle due to his condition.
