A three-vehicle crash east of Burley claimed the life of an Idaho Falls man Friday afternoon.

It happened at about 5 p.m. on the eastbound side of Interstate 84 near milepost 217.

According to a news release from Idaho State Police, Lionel Vaughan, 58, of Arimo was stopped with backed-up traffic in a 2004 Peterbilt truck when Woody Clifford, 54, of Idaho Falls, failed to stop and rear-ended Vaughan’s truck with his 2016 Jeep Patriot. Clifford was then hit from behind by a 2005 Toyota van driven by Troy Degraff, 42, of Folsom, California.

Vaughan’s truck was pushed into the median. Clifford’s and Degraff’s cars overturned – Clifford’s caught fire.

Police say Clifford died at the scene.

A ground ambulance took Degraff and his five passengers to Cassia Regional Hospital in Burley.

Vaughan was not hospitalized.

Police say everyone involved was wearing a seat belt.
