Driver falls asleep at the wheel, killing Twin Falls woman on Highway 46

The woman died from her injuries at the scene, and her teen passenger was transported to St. Luke's in Boise for medical treatment.

WENDELL, Idaho — Idaho State Police say a driver fell asleep while driving on State Highway 46, two miles north of Wendell, Idaho, crossed the center lane and crashed into a car, killing a Twin Falls woman early Saturday morning.

Daniel Ortiz, 21, of Wendell was driving southbound on Highway 46 in a 2009 Dodge 1500 truck when he fell asleep and crossed the center line, crashing head-on into a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer, driven by Jessie Otton, 26, of Twin Falls.

Otton died from her injuries at the scene, and her teen passenger was transported by air ambulance to St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Boise, police say.

Both Otton and her passenger were wearing seatbelts. Police did not release the status of the juvenile passenger.
