The Red Dragons' next episode is set to unveil a fascinating chapter. It will show how some Welsh left Wales in 1865 and settled in Patagonia, Argentina. Their community, to this day, speaks Welsh. This next episode brings a thrilling twist as Rob and Ryan fly in some of these Patagonian super fans to visit Wrexham for the first time on St. David's Day.
But the big story is Jacob Mendy. Mendy, hailing from Gambia, is the first player to represent Wrexham in the Cote D'Ivoire African tournament. Being called up to join the Gambia squad for the crucial qualifiers against Burundi and the Ivory Coast, Mendy, a 26-year-old left-back, showcased his prowess on the international stage and made a significant mark in his career. Mendy was named in The Gambia's final squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Despite Gambia's loss, Wrexham's Jacob Mendy's debut for the Gambian national team in the World Cup qualifiers was exceptional. He expressed gratitude for Wrexham's support, which bolstered his determination to continue excellence on the international stage.
This remarkable achievement follows Mendy's successful second season with Wrexham, having joined the club from Boreham Wood in the summer of 2022. Mendy seized the opportunity in the match we will see some of in the next Wrexham episode against the Ivory Coast, a moment that will be remembered in his journey. Mendy's debut in the African tournament was a noteworthy milestone in his international career.
A few days later, on social media, Mendy expressed his gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey to represent his country. In a tweet, he said, "Still processing it! I just wanted to thank everyone for the support and the messages I've received, and I'm still receiving. I really appreciate it. Hungry for more."
The Welcome to Wrexham docuseries follows the plight of Wrexham AFC, the Welsh team in the working-class town that holds the title of third-oldest professional soccer club in the world. In 2020, Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney bought the club for $2.5 million in hopes of "turning the club into an underdog story the whole world could root for."
This series has built a large fanbase for its much broader focus than the average sports documentary, with emotional backstories and the heart-pounding moments of on-field competition. Wrexham fans can be counted in Idaho, too!
Welcome to Wrexham is at 10 EDT/PDT, Thursdays on FX and streams the next day on Hulu.
