Idaho refugees become American citizens during the citizenship ceremony in Boise

Since 1975, Idaho has resettled over 23,000 people from almost 60 countries.

BOISE, Idaho — The Citizenship Ceremony welcomed over a dozen refugees in Idaho as new American citizens on Saturday.

Boise Mayor Dave Beiter kicked off the ceremony at the Grove Plaza in Boise.

The ceremony also falls on World Refugee Day, which has been celebrated across the world and in Boise since 2001.

The ceremony also had cultural food, art, and performances for attendees to enjoy.

"We are hoping that this day also reminds people that welcoming people who are escaping persecution, who are escaping war to find a home where they can be safe and secure and can be apart of their community is so important," Kara Fink, with the Idaho Office for Refugees, said.

Since 1975, Idaho has resettled over 23,000 people from almost 60 countries.
