Idaho Humane Society to open new Boise facility this year

The new animal care center is located on Overland Road. It is expected to open this spring.

BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho Humane Society is about to have a new home with more space.

The new 42,000 square-foot animal care center is located on Overland Road between Cole and Maple Grove, near Walmart.

It's expected to be completed in April or May, and be fully operational by the summer. Crews are finishing the interior now.

Thursday afternoon, Chief Development Officer Jimmy Hillig gave us a look around.

‘We're going to have a new vet medical center which will double our capacity to provide lifesaving services for animals,” Hillig said. “Last year alone we provided over $1 million in free and discounted medical services to low-income families, and we expect that to expand greatly at our new facility.”

The dog enclosures will be larger, with more natural light. As for cats, each one will have a little door to a "catio," where the cat can step outside for some fresh air.

The humane society's existing facility near the Boise Airport will remain open for animal control and for taking in strays.

Fundraising for the new animal care center is still going on. You can pitch in through the Idaho Humane Society's website.
