Boise Start-up Week wraps up with NASA showcase and food pitch competition

This year's winner of the food pitch competition produced a line of spices made from crickets.

BOISE, Idaho — Boise Start-up Week, Idaho's largest community-sponsored event for startup businesses, is wrapping up this weekend.

On Friday, Boise State University partnered with NASA to showcase intellectual property from both BSU and NASA. The event was created in hopes of providing licensing opportunities to small and large companies in Idaho and to help folks grow and expand their businesses.

Some of the speakers included a NASA technology transfer strategist and retired astronaut and Boise State distinguished educator, Steve Swanson.

“The desired outcomes for an event like this would hopefully be job placement for our students and also partnering opportunities for our companies across the Treasure Valley and Idaho,” Boise State Director of Office of Technology Transfer Katy Weiser said.

“NASA has subcontractors in all 50 states so you can be anywhere and be working on a NASA project and even here at BSU, we have programs working with research and all over so NASA’s everywhere around,” Swanson said.

Boise Start-Up Week is a collaborative effort by more than 50 organizations.

One of the events at Boise’s Trailhead Center included a shark tank style food pitch competition. The top five finalists had to pitch their products to the judges before Boise Mayor Dave Bieter announced the winner.

This year's winner was Kate Stoddard. She produced a line of spices made from crickets.

Stoddard now gets shelf space at Albertsons Broadway Store, a $20,000 cash prize, and a two-day immersive experience at Chobani's innovation center in Twin Falls.
