ELMORE COUNTY -- The Elmore County Sheriff's Office is investigating after four dogs and a cat were found dead outside of Mountain Home Monday.

Deputies were called out just before 12:30 p.m. after the dead pets were discovered two-and-a-half miles east of Mountain Home near the Union Pacific railroad track.

Several hours later, the sheriff's office was called out again to the same area for a second report of dead pets. According to Sheriff Mike Hollingshead, two more dogs and a cat were found about a half-mile away from the first spot.

Police say they have identified and notified the owners of all four of the dogs, but do not know who the cat belonged to. There does not appear to be a connection between the two pairs of of dogs and the cat.

The animals' causes of death have not been determined, and its unclear whether they were intentionally killed by a person, or met some other fate.

The Sheriff's Office is working to determine whether the dead pets are connected to any missing pet reports given to the Mountain Home Police Department.

Investigators with the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the Mountain Home Police Department and the Mountain Home Animal Shelter to solve the case.

Pet owners are urged to keep their dogs and cats safe by making sure they are confined in a house, kennel or secure yard.
