Two Caldwell homes 'total losses' after separate fires

Two homes were completely destroyed after two separate fires Sunday afternoon.

CALDWELL — Two Caldwell homes are total losses and a third was damaged after two separate fires Sunday afternoon.

The first fire broke out in the second story of a home on the 3500 block of Montana Avenue.

Residents were home at the time but were able to get out safely.

Fire officials say that home is a total loss.

As crews were mopping up hot spots at that home, crews were dispatched to a duplex on fire at 523 Joliet Street.

Officials say the fire started inside one of the homes and quickly spread to the attached second home. Crews were able to stop the spread of the fire before it consumed the second home.

Residents were home but were able to get out safely. Firefighters were able to rescue two cats.

The home in which the fire started is a total loss, as is a detached garage near the second home.

No word on what may have started either fire.
