Boise veteran nicknamed 'The Singing Janitor' gets free home makeover

Jimmy Ragland was one of three Treasure Valley residents whose homes were remodeled and restored for free.

Imagine not having any heat in your home and a leaky roof this time of year.
That's how a Vietnam war-era veteran in Boise was living until Tuesday.

Jimmy Ragland was one of three Treasure Valley people to get a free home makeover courtesy of radio station KTSY 89.5 and generous businesses within the community.

Ragland was surprised live on the radio Tuesday morning with the news that he will be getting a new roof, floor and a furnace.

"Just opening that door, I saw that, and I was like oh my lord," Ragland said. "The first thing I could say is thank you Jesus because that's the first word that came to my mind."

Ragland is nicknamed the singing janitor because of his time spent working at the Boise VA cleaning the halls and singing a tune.

But despite his jolly demeanor, Ragland's life hasn't exactly been easy.

Originally from Georgia, he was drafted into the military back in 1972, raised three daughters on his own, one of which died at the young age of 24.

"She was a bright star," Ragland said.

For years, Jimmy has been living without any heat under an old and damaged roof.

"It gets chilled, but I say, with the love of God, it keeps the house warm," Ragland said.

Ragland's friend nominated him for the KTSY Breaking and Entering Campaign, in which the radio station remodels and restores homes that need it.

Typically, the people can't afford the repairs on their own.

Ragland is one of three Treasure Valley people that the station surprised this week.

"Diamond Heating and Cooling started out by giving away a furnace every Christmas season and then we had some other friends jump on board," said Brian Yeager, general manager of KTSY 89.5. "Dillabaugh Flooring America said 'hey we want to be a part of this,' Treasure Valley Remodel and Restoration joined, and then this year Signature Roofing."

By the time all the work is done, Jimmy will have a much-needed transformed home.

"I mean I can sleep warm, I don't have to worry about turning on the space heater you know," Ragland said.

KTSY says the outpouring of support is heartwarming, especially during the holidays.

"It's the community coming together to take care of each other and that to me feels so great," Yeager said.
