BOISE -- Former Idaho Gov. Cecil Andrus on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit seeking to force the U.S. Department of Energy to release information about proposed shipments of commercial spent nuclear fuel to an eastern Idaho facility.

The lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Boise contends the federal agency is failing to comply with Freedom of Information Act requirements.

Andrus says the proposed shipments that became known in January violate a 1995 agreement between Idaho and federal officials banning such shipments and requiring cleanup of nuclear waste stored at the Idaho National Laboratory.

Andrus says the federal agency is improperly withholding information about its request for a waiver from the 1995 agreement.

The former governor says the federal agency responded to his request for information with dozens of redacted pages.
