Allstate giving out free disaster preparedness kits

Allstate Insurance agencies are giving out 1,000 free disaster preparedness kits in the Treasure Valley.

BOISE - Unfortunately, disasters can strike at any moment.

And an already bad situation can quickly turn even worse if you're not prepared.

As today kicks off the beginning of Disaster Preparedness Week, Allstate Insurance agencies and the Red Cross want Idahoans to be ready in case of an emergency.

"We did some research and found that roughly 85 percent of folks are not prepared to handle a disaster as it arises," says David Nejely, a local Allstate agent.

Allstate Insurance agencies across the Treasure Valley are handing out 1,000 free kits to make sure you're ready.

"So here is a few items that come in the kit, first aid supplies, we got ponchos emergency blankets, emergency whistle to summon for help, this is the hand-powered flashlight, it doesn't need batteries and it's quite bright," points out Nejely.

"You're going to want your glasses, things like that, maybe if you have prescriptions, you want to have your medications and some of your records, bank records, things to keep handy that you don't want to go back in your home and get," says Ann Callanan with the Red Cross.

The Red Cross is typically on the front lines after a large-scale disaster.

Monday, Allstate cut the Red Cross a $100,000 check, $20,000 of which will be spent locally in the Treasure Valley.

"We always need donations, there is always something we can help folks with," says Callanan.

Kits are being given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
