Albertsons donates 5,000 pounds of pet food

The 5,000 pounds of pet food will help feed abandoned and abused animals.

BOISE - Fewer dogs and cats will go hungry thanks to Albertsons and its customers.

A truckload of pet food was delivered to the Idaho Humane Society Tuesday morning.

The 5,000 pounds of Open Nature dog and cat food will help feed abandoned and abused animals.

Some of the pet food is also going to families and individuals in need who receive food for their pets from the Idaho Humane Society pet food pantry.

"We go through about 66 pounds of food a day here at the Idaho Humane Society, so the food that Albertsons provided us is really going to last our shelter a very long time," said Kristine Schellhaas, with the Idaho Humane Society.

Treasure Valley Albertsons stores supported a pet food drive during the month of January.

Customers were asked to donate pet food and supplies in bins near the check stands.

Albertsons also made pet food donations as part of a social media hashtag campaign.
