Students from East Canyon Elementary School in Nampa are knitting hats for newborns.

About a dozen 5th graders are giving up their recess to help keep babies at St. Luke's Nampa hospital warm and toasty this winter.

They are choosing to spend their free time at lunch inside working on the handmade caps rather than playing outside on the playground with their friends.

Teacher Christie Aaron says she got the idea for the project from a friend who works in the NICU at St. Luke's in Meridian.

"I love it, I think it's great, I wish we had more time in school to be able to do things like this,” said Aaron. “But recess is the chance that we have to work on things like this and if they're willing to come in at recess I'm willing to share more knowledge with them."

She says they hope to deliver the hats right before Christmas.
