Young girl and man who died at Redfish Lake identified

The investigation into what happened to the man and child is still ongoing.

CUSTER COUNTY, Idaho — A young girl who was pulled from Redfish Lake and the man whose body was recovered by a dive team have been identified as 5-year-old Claire Tanney and 31-year-old Christopher Joseph Tanney.

Tanney served in the Air Force for almost 11 years and had been stationed in Mountain Home for the past two-and-a-half years. His most recent rank was Technical Sergeant.

Just before 11 a.m. on Friday, the Custer County Sheriff's Office received reports of a girl being pulled from Redfish Lake.

Police say people at the scene gave Claire Tanney CPR. She was transported to St. Luke's Wood River Hospital in Ketchum and then she was transported to Boise Medical Center where she later died.

Near the scene, an overturned kayak was found in the lake and a pair of men's boots were found along the shore, according to investigators.

After an Idaho Fish and Game boat crew used sonar to search the area, they detected what they believe to be a body about 55 feet deep in the water, police say.

The Custer County Sheriff's Office says a dive team from Bingham County recovered Christopher Tanney's body at about 10: 40 a.m. Saturday.

Police have not stated if the man and young girl are related.

"We sent a boat and three divers and a boat operator," Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland said. "They were on their last dive of the day because they were running out of air in their tanks, and so they did their last dive of the day, and they found him."

The investigation into what happened to the man and child is still ongoing.
