Sheriff: Rupert man charged with murder after Minidoka shooting

RUPERT, Idaho - The Minidoka County Sheriff's Office says a 22-year-old Rupert man is in custody in connection with a shooting that left one man dead and a woman injured Saturday evening.

Deputies were called to the town of Minidoka around 10 p.m. Saturday to investigate a shooting that involved two victims.

Sheriff Eric Snarr released a statement to the media Monday. He said that Rafael Gil Vargas, 43, and Nallely Vargas Juarez, 19, both of Minidoka, were shot. Rafael was flown by Life Flight to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello where he later died. Nallely was taken to a local hospital where she was treated and released.

The sheriff says Denis Orlando Lopez-Serrano was arrested for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of kidnapping with an enhanced penalty for using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Lopez-Serrano was booked into the Mini-Cassia Criminal Justice Center where he is being held without bond.

The case remains under investigation and the sheriff has not released any other details about the case at this time.
