COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — Two Post Falls men were sentenced to two years in prison for stealing a gun that was later used to shoot and kill Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore in 2015.

U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge sentenced Nicholace Cane Thomas, 23, to 24 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for possession of a stolen firearm.

Lodge sentenced Donald Eugene Shuck, 33, to 200 hours of community service and five years of probation for accessory after the fact.

According to court records, Shuck and Thomas burglarized cars in the Post Falls area on the morning of April 24, 2015, according to the United States Attorney’s Office. Thomas stole a gun from a vehicle and showed it so Shuck, who then drove them from the area.

According to the attorney’s office, Thomas later traded the gun for methamphetamine.

Twelve days after the theft, Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore was shot and killed with the stolen gun by Johnathan Renfro, according to the attorney’s office.

Moore stopped Renfro while walking through a Coeur d’Alene neighborhood that had fallen victim to car burglaries. Investigators said Renfro pulled out a gun, shot Moore, took the officer’s gun and then sped off in his car.
