Man shot and killed in Malheur County, suspects at large

The 54-year-old victim was pronounced dead at Saint Alphonsus Wednesday night.

ONTARIO, Oregon -- Authorities are searching for suspects after a man was shot to death north of Ontario Wednesday night.

Malheur County Sheriff Brian Wolfe said the shooting was reported to 911 dispatch at 9:15 p.m. OSP troopers arrived at a home in the 4400 block of Highway 201 about ten minutes later to find a critically injured man outside the house.

The victim, later identified as 54-year-old Douglas Madrid of Nyssa, had been shot in the head with a shotgun. He was taken to Saint Alphonsus in Ontario, where he was pronounced dead.

Wolfe said the area Major Crimes team has been activated and is investigating the shooting, but no suspects are in custody.

District Attorney David Goldthorpe said investigators have identified as many as four "persons of interest," including the individual they believe pulled the trigger.

"Several of our police officers haven't slept since the incident, they're still going," he said. "When we activate the Major Crimes team - which is what happened in this case - it's all hands on deck."

Wolfe said multiple people were present when the shooting happened. Investigators have not released a motive in the killing, but believe the shooter and victim knew each other. There is no threat to the public, according to the sheriff's office.

Goldthorpe said the persons of interest may be in a gray or black late 2000's Nissan Titan pickup truck. Their names have not been released, but the DA said all four are Ontario residents.

Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities immediately.

"Any tips, any information, whether it's seeing the vehicle or knowing somebody who may be a close associate of the victim, or has had recent contact with the victim should call the Malheur County Sheriff's Office," he said.
