Shooting suspect barricaded in Hood River home, nearby businesses evacuated

Police said the incident happened near the intersection of Cascade Avenue and Clearwater Lane. Nearby businesses and schools were locked down or evacuated.

HOOD RIVER, Ore. — A man is in custody after an hours-long standoff with police in a Hood River home near the intersection of Clearwater Lane and Cascade Avenue Thursday afternoon.

Sometime after 9:30 p.m. the Hood River Police Department posted on their Facebook that they had taken a male suspect safely into custody.

Evacuation orders were lifted. Residents and businesses that were asked to evacuate during the standoff can now return home, police said.

The Hood River Police Department initially described the incident on Facebook as an active shooter situation, but later clarified in a news release that the suspect was "contained in the house."

The situation was still ongoing as of about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, when police updated the Facebook post to say that tear gas was being deployed and nearby residents should make sure their windows were closed.

The situation began at about noon when officers responded to a call about a dangerous situation at the home, police said, and a person in the house fired multiple shots when police tried to make contact.

In the initial post around 12:45 p.m. Thursday, the department said officers were evacuating residents from the area and urged all other residents to stay away from the site. Just before 2 p.m., police said evacuations were ongoing and they had evacuated "a large group of children and staff from a nearby school," but did not specify which school.

Several schools in the Hood River County School District were placed on a "secure status" lockdown, the district said on Facebook. In an update at about 2 p.m., the district said the lockdown had been lifted at all schools.

Residents in the vicinity should continue to shelter in place, police said in an update to the Facebook post around 2:30 p.m.

An employee at a Dairy Queen in the area spoke to KGW by phone and said the restaurant was shut down and the area was being evacuated. Staff at the nearby Hair & Nail Studio said police told them to lock their doors and stay inside.
