BOISE, Idaho — A 20-year-old Meridian man accused of killing one person and wounding two more in a shooting at a Boise Bench home opened fire after a fight broke out between a group of women late Sunday night, prosecutors say.
Anthony Alcala is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Briana Martinez, who lived at the home, as well as two counts of aggravated battery and a possible weapons enhancement.
His codefendants, 18-year-old Jessica Lee Perez Timmons and 22-year-old Taja Ra McMurtrey-Winn of Boise, are charged with accessory to a felony for allegedly helping hide Alcala from police, but prosecutors have dropped charges connecting them to the shooting itself.
According to Prosecutor Jeff White, the bloodshed erupted after McMurtrey-Winn went to the home at Owyhee and Palouse streets Sunday night to retrieve some of her property from an ex-boyfriend.
At some point during that planned exchange, however, McMurtrey-Winn and Perez Timmons got into a physical fight with Briana Martinez and Martinez's sister, White said.
"It was during the course of that physical altercation with the females that Mr. Alcala stepped out with a pistol and started firing shots at the females," he added.
Briana Martinez was hit once in the chest, the prosecutor said. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Her sister was hit three times in the stomach, White added, while McMurtrey-Winn's ex-boyfriend was hit once. Both survived their wounds, and are being treated at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center.
Alcala, McMurtrey-Winn and Perez Timmons were all gone by the time Boise Police officers got to the scene, investigators say, alerted by neighbors who dialed 911 to report screaming and gunshots coming from the house.
White said McMurtrey-Winn and Perez Timmons helped Alcala after the shooting, and the trio appeared to be planning to leave town.
"There were efforts undertaken to conceal his whereabouts throughout the day, and according to law enforcement officers who found the house that he was essentially barricaded into, when they found him, he and the other females were witnessed packing up clothing, carrying it to the car," he said.
The three suspects were arrested after police tracked them to a house on Lezana Avenue in Meridian, leading to a massive law enforcement response that blocked Meridian Road for hours Tuesday night.
Judge Cheri Copsey ultimately set Alcala's bond at $1 million, and both McMurtrey-Winn and Perez Timmons' bonds at $250,000 each. If convicted, the women face a maximum of five years in prison, while Alcala could receive a life sentence.
All three are due back in court April 30 for a preliminary hearing.
