King's Landing in Kuna: Street names getting the 'Game of Thrones' treatment

A future housing development in Kuna could soon be full of iconic names from the hit HBO series "Game of Thrones," if a local engineering firm gets its way.

KUNA - Think about some of the well-known streets in the Treasure Valley.

There's Harrison Boulevard in Boise's North End, named after a president. And Warm Springs Avenue, just east of downtown, named for the geothermal water underneath. There's also Holmes Street, a lesser-known hidden gem on Boise's Bench neighborhood.

Before they became the iconic, local landmarks they are today they all started out as just ideas.

At B & A Engineers Inc. in Boise they've been coming up with ideas for street names since 1921.

It's all part of the planning process, along with sewer, water, and sidewalks.

"Everything before the houses go up, basically, is what we do," said lead designer Jennell Hall.

It was one of Hall's latest subdivision layouts that has gotten a lot of people's attention. Three years ago she submitted plans suggesting streets named after characters from one of her favorite TV shows - "Game of Thrones."

"I love it," she said of the show.

Back in 2015, during the show's fifth season, Hall just threw some names on a plot, not expecting them to stick. Her colleagues thought the same thing.

"'You're nuts, those are never going to get through, but go ahead and try,'" Hall says her colleagues told her. "And I did."

And some have stuck, so far. It's still early, but the 15-acre first phase of the Silver Trail Subdivision in southern Ada County, just off Ten Mile Road, could soon see street signs labeled with Westerosi residents.

And why not? There’s already at least one neighborhood in Ada County sporting pop culture references. Names like Rooney, Abe, Froman, Sloan, and Ferris. Sound familiar? All are from the 1986 movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

So why not a Sansa Street, or an Arya Avenue, or even a Podrick Place? All are popular and pending. Not that those names mean much to Hall's boss.

"I've seen two episodes," admits Dave Crawford, who has worked with Hall for the past 17 years.

"It fits right with her personality," Crawford added. "She's quite the, she likes to call herself a geek so I'll just run with that."

The Ada County Assessor's Office has already run with two approvals - West Rickon Street and South Baratheon Avenue. But if Hall gets her way, you may also be able to live on Greyjoy Road, Tyrion Court, or Hodor Drive - a kind of King's Landing in Kuna.

South Baratheon Avenue is one of the proposed street names for the Silver Trail Subdivision in Kuna.

As they say on the show, "winter is coming," which is also when Hall expects final approval to come for the first phase of street names. And like other big fans of "Game of Thrones," the first thing Hall plans to do once the street signs are put up is take a picture with them.
