BREMERTON, Wash. -- A 24-year-old man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly tried to steal a truck with a 2-year-old child inside.
The child's mother fought off the would-be thief, and he was chased down and apprehended by Bremerton police.
Police were called to an attempted vehicle theft on the 1500 block of Elizabeth Avenue at 4:25 p.m. Video provided by Bremerton police shows a suspect jogging up to a pickup truck while the mother was placing something in its bed.
The suspect jumps in the cab and begins to drive off, but the woman is able to stop him. He fled on foot.
Bremerton bicycle officers were nearby and responded immediately. The suspect tried to get into other unsecured vehicles, with no success. He also jumped into the bed of a truck stopped at a red light, but bailed out of it when officers approached.
He then ran into a home on the 1000 block of Warren Avenue, and threatened residents there when they confronted him, but fled when he heard sirens.
Officers caught the suspect when he fell on the sidewalk near the home he had entered. Medics were called to treat the suspect, who was believed to be under the influence of drugs, and he kicked one of them in the face.
The man was booked into jail on suspicion of first degree robbery, second degree kidnapping and third degree assault. The Kitsap Sun will post his name when he has been formally charged with a crime, which is expected today.
