The 2008 Carter Cup concluded today at Blue Lakes CC in Twin Falls, ID as the IGA Amateur team defeated the Rocky Mountain Section PGA team by a significant margin, 36-24 in a Ryder Cup style format event.
Each team consists of 10 players that are selected through a points qualifying system throughout the season. The IGA Amateur team included Joe Malay (Weiser), Quinn Carbol (Pocatello), Dan Pickens (Pocatello), Jon Crozier (Meridian), Eric Peterson(Nampa), Mark Dance (Idaho Falls), Todd Points (Star), Jonathan Edwards (Weiser), Mike Deboard (Boise) and Matt Meador (Hailey). Half of the players on the IGA Amateur team had never previously competed on any Carter Cup team. The PGA team included Allan Morrison (McCall), Adam Martens (Boise), Ben Bryson (Eagle), Jake Kasza (Boise), Justin Ellis (Mountain Home), Fred Luthy (Rexburg), Todd Bindner (Boise), John Van Vleet (Preston), John Wallace (Boise) and Mike Hamblin (Twin Falls).
On Day 1, the format included a morning session of Alternate shot followed by an afternoon session of Foursomes matches (2-man best ball teams). After Day 1 the IGA Amateurs led the PGA Professional 17-13. Day 2 consists of singles matches.
This is relatively unfamiliar territory for the IGA Amateurs as this is the 1st time since 2004 and only the 2nd time in the past 10 years that the IGA Amateur team has claimed the title.
