Should Mike Rice be fired over the controversial video?
NEWARK, N.J. -- Controversial Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice has been fired after a shocking video surfaced showing him allegedly abusing players, according to ESPN.COM.
The video in question shows Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice using gay slurs, shoving and grabbing his players and throwing balls at them in practice over the past three seasons.
The clip prompted the university's athletic director to fire the coach on Wednesday.
Scarlet Knights AD Tim Pernetti was given a copy of the video in late November by a disgruntled former employee, and he suspended Rice for three games, fined him $50,000 and made him undergo anger management classes for inappropriate behavior after investigating it.
On Wednesday, Pernetti released a statement explaining his decision to now fire Rice.
"I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice," Pernetti said in the statement. "Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community."
ESPN aired the videotape on Tuesday and it has many on social media criticizing Rutgers, including NBA superstar LeBron James.
