A Washington state family who entered their vacation home on Lake Roosevelt got a scare when they came face to face with an armed man who had been living there while they were away.

Sheriff's deputies from Lincoln County are now searching for the man, who fled the area after being discovered.

The gunman and homeowners exchanged words inside the house before he ran outside and sped away in a white SUV.

The family called 9-1-1, but when deputies arrived they couldn't find the man.

The sheriff said ammunition and evidence left behind leads investigators to believe the suspect may be part of an armed militia.

They are now working with other law enforcement agencies, including federal authorities, to identify him.

Investigators believe they may have narrowed down who the suspected militiaman may be, but they don't want to release any more information than that at this time.
