CALDWELL -- Canyon County commissioners and the sheriff have reached an agreement that will keep the sheriff's inmate labor detail program funded for the next year.

The sheriff suspended the program earlier this month, saying he didn't have enough staff.

Last week, we reported that the commissioners had proposed shifting funding to the misdemeanor probation department and reducing the sheriff's salary by $3,000 for fiscal year 2015.

Tuesday evening, the commissioners and the sheriff entered into a memorandum of understanding that will keep the inmate labor detail program funded and restore funds to the sheriff's budget, so the sheriff will not see a pay cut next year.

In return, the sheriff agrees to not eliminate or suspend any programs under his direct control without at least 30 days written notice and discussion with the commissioners.
