BOISE - Holiday travelers on Highway 55 will want to plan ahead, and expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
The Idaho Transportation Department will have flaggers at the Banks-Lowman road starting at 10 a.m. Monday. They'll be there until 7 p.m., or until traffic traffic on Banks-Lowman can safely enter Highway 55 without their help.
Congestion is typically heavy in this area during holiday weekends with travelers from the Garden Valley area trying to get on Highway 55.
Here are some tips from ITD:
- Congestion is usually heaviest from 3 to 6 p.m. on the last day of a holiday weekend, such as Labor Day. Head home before or after that time to avoid the rush.
- Consider using an alternate route. If you're driving to the Treasure Valley from McCall, go north on Idaho 55 and take U.S. Highway 95 south from New Meadows to Interstate 84. From Garden Valley, consider using Idaho Highway 21.
- If you do use Idaho 55 when congestion is heaviest, plan on an extra hour or two for your return trip.
