BURLEY, Idaho -- The Idaho Transportation Department and Idaho State Police are investigating a crash involving two tractor-trailers on eastbound Interstate 84 at milepost 196, east of Hazelton.
The crash was reported around 8:19 p.m. Wednesday.
Police say a 2013 Freightliner pulling a bulk cargo tanker driven by 48-year-old Matthew Eveland of Pocatello was eastbound when his trailer blew a tire.
Eveland's truck was struck from behind by another Freightliner hauling onions that was driven by 48-year-old Christopher Torrance of Ontario, Oregon.
The crash caused the onion truck cab to catch fire. The bulk tanker went off the interstate and rolled onto its side.
Torrance was flown by air ambulance to St. Luke's Magic Valley. The extent of his injuries are unknown.
The tanker was carrying a hazardous chemical, which caused the closure of Interstate 84. Hazmat crews responded to clean up the chemicals.
The eastbound lanes of I-84 were closed overnight, but reopened this morning.
ISP dispatch say they received a report of another crash in that area of Interstate 84 around 9:30 a.m. Thursday. This crash involves three vehicles and is affecting eastbound traffic at milepost 192. One lane of I-84 is currently blocked one mile east of Hazelton. Motorists should expect delays.
