CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) - Canyon County commissioners have cut the sheriff's pay after the sheriff suspended indefinitely an inmate labor program due to a shortage of officers because so many left for better paying jobs.

The Idaho Press Tribune reports that commissioners also on Thursday cut the sheriff's budget by $370,000 during a meeting to finalize the 2015 budget.

Commissioners say they are working on restarting the inmate labor program by moving it to a new department.

Sheriff Kiernan Donahue says he doesn't think his $3,000 pay cut can be looked at by anyone as other than a personal attack on him.

Donahue late in July temporarily suspended the inmate labor program to transfer officers to the jail to maintain the federally mandated number of officers after 23 quit during the month.
