MERIDIAN -- With temperatures hovering in the 90s throughout the weekend, it's the perfect time to enjoy a scoop of ice cream. There's a special Idaho-themed flavor now available in a store near you.
The award winning flavor was created by a Meridian food blogger.
Sara Wells runs the blog "Our Best Bites" with her best friend from Louisiana.
"We've been blogging for about six and a half years now," said Wells.
The mom loves sharing new recipes with her growing family.
"I always test things out on my kids and my husband too cause I know they'll be honest," said Wells.
Recently, Wells was invited to take part in a nationwide contest sponsored by Kroger. The task? Create an ice cream inspired by Idaho.
"We each had to come up with a recipe that featured something from a region from where we live," said Wells of the bloggers involved in the competition.
Wells played around with a lot of different ingredients, including chocolate covered potato chips. Even though that concoction didn't win rave reviews from her family, one ingredient did.
"The huckleberry pie was a clear favorite."
The food blogger used her ice cream maker to make a test batch at home before flying to Michigan for the competition.
"I started with a vanilla ice cream base and then I folded in fresh huckleberries, which I had cooked down so it had a huckleberry syrup in it too so it's bright purple with chunks of fruit in it," said Wells.
She also added fresh baked pie crust and a cinnamon streusel crumble. The mix was a hit with her family and with the judges. She won the competition and the opportunity to have her ice cream sold in Kroger stores across the U.S.
"It's available now at Fred Meyer stores here in the Treasure Valley," said Wells.
The Idaho inspired Private Selection ice cream is only available for a limited time.
