BOISE -- A Boise man is behind bars at the Ada County Jail on a half-million dollar bond after police say his dog attacked and severely injured a six-year-old boy.

Christopher Anderson faces five counts of injury to a child and resisting officers.

Police say Anderson, who knows the child's parents, was watching the boy and two siblings March 27. Witnesses said the pitbull-type dog attacked the boy after Anderson left them alone in a van In a South Broadway parking lot.

The boy suffered serious injuries to his face. The other children, ages 9 and 11, were not hurt.

When police arrived on the scene, the boy had already been taken to a Boise hospital by ambulance, and the dog was running loose around the neighborhood. Officers searched for the dog with Animal Control, and later found it in a neighbor's yard.

Officials say Anderson knew the dog was aggressive. They also found out about previous cases of injury to a child involving Anderson and the victims.

The children are in protective custody while the dog is being held by Animal Control at the Idaho Humane Society. Anderson was arrested Saturday after prosecutors issued a warrant.

His preliminary hearing has been set for July 18.
