BOISE -- Idaho has surpassed the national average for the price of a gallon of gasoline, but AAA Idaho still reports this year will be among the busiest Fourth of July holidays in years.

It s just the price we pay, you know? said Thomas Arroyo as he was filling up his tank on the way back to Burley.

He plans to travel back to Boise for the fireworks display on Friday.

Those with AAA Idaho say the price to fill up is about 20 cents higher than it was a year ago and Arroyo said he can believe that statistic.

Oh yeah, compared to this year, he said. I just don t know why the gas prices are where they are at.

AAA Idaho spokesman Dave Carlson says in recent years the cost to travel has declined leading up to the Fourth of July, but AAA data shows with the violence in Iraq, crude oil prices are up.

Carlson said people are dusting off their credit cards to travel. It is a sign that consumer confidence is bouncing back.

We have seen some improvements in the economy and that is generally the best predictors of who is going to travel, how many are going to travel, he explained.

While stopped at a Boise gas station to fill up on a tank of gas, the Jackson family said they have spent a lot of money for gas on their two-week road trip around the Northwest.

I think during our whole trip we spent over $1,000 on gas, said Rachel Jackson.

She said roads have already been very busy and hectic, especially since the family is hauling a travel trailer behind their van.

As she heads back home through Idaho to Oregon, Jackson had a bit of travel knowledge to pass along to the rest of us before the busy travel week ahead starts.

It can be pretty crazy, she said. There are a lot of people trying to get around you and driving like maniacs.

Happy 4th of July, be safe and don t drink and drive, she added.

AAA also reports numbers are expected to increase this week for those traveling by airplane. More people will fly this year than compared to this time last year, but AAA numbers show the price you will pay for airfare has dropped.
