MERIDIAN -- A high-speed chase ended early Friday morning when the driver of the fleeing car went off the road and crashed, police say.

The incident started around midnight, when an officer attempted to pull the vehicle over. Instead, the car took off, police say.

The officer pursued the car until speeds became too dangerous, and police decided to call off the chase. But minutes later, the officer came across the same car crashed into the sign for Willow Tree Dental on Cherry Lane.

The vehicle's occupants had already ran away, leaving behind a pair of sandals near the car.

"The people at the scene, when we showed up, had fled," Meridian Police Sgt. Branden Fiscus said. "We're currently looking for those people and continuing the investigation."

Police say that although the airbags did deploy, they believe people inside the car were injured when it wrecked.
